Abiy Ahmed maintains a commanding lead in Ethiopia’s prime ministerial succession market due to his Prosperity Party’s decisive June 2026 parliamentary victory, which delivered a supermajority of seats and cleared the path for his swearing-in to another five-year term in early October. This result extended the consolidation of power that began with the 2018 transition from the EPRDF coalition and the 2021 landslide. Ongoing insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia, plus tensions in Tigray, continue to test governance but have not disrupted the ruling party’s institutional control or legislative arithmetic. Shifts remain possible through internal party realignments, health events, or major escalations that alter parliamentary dynamics before the next cycle.
