Abiy Ahmed’s commanding position stems from his Prosperity Party’s decisive victory in Ethiopia’s June 1, 2026 general election, securing 438 of 501 contested parliamentary seats and a supermajority that allows the incoming House of Peoples’ Representatives to select the prime minister. This outcome follows Abiy’s long tenure since 2018 and reflects the party’s organizational dominance despite ongoing regional conflicts and limited opposition participation. Formal confirmation is scheduled for early October 2026 under Ethiopia’s parliamentary system. While the implied probability exceeds 90 percent, shifts could still arise from health developments, sudden political realignments, or unforeseen escalations in domestic insurgencies before the vote.
