Elevated memory chip costs, driven by surging AI infrastructure demand, pushed DRAM and NAND prices up nearly 400% year-over-year and raised the bill of materials for 256GB iPhone 18 Pro models by about 38%. This prompted Apple to announce a $100 price increase at its September 9 event, setting the iPhone 18 Pro starting price at $1,199 for 256GB storage—below earlier analyst forecasts of $200–$300 hikes or even $1,399. Apple offset some costs through design efficiencies and expanded financing options like Apple Upgrade leasing, while also raising prices on Macs and iPads earlier in June. The Pro lineup launches September 18 amid a competitive landscape where rivals face similar component pressures.
