Escalating US-Iran confrontation, including a US naval blockade effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz, has fueled Houthi threats to disrupt the Bab el-Mandeb Strait—a vital chokepoint channeling 12% of global seaborne oil flows. Trader consensus on Polymarket assigns subdued implied probabilities below 25% for effective closure (IMF PortWatch 7-day ship arrivals ≤10) by April 30 or May 31, buoyed by current transit averages near 33 vessels and European naval task force readiness. Yet, risks loom large: Baltic Dry Index at 2,484 (up 22% monthly), container freight rates elevated amid Africa rerouting costs, and Brent crude hovering near $110/barrel, with analysts eyeing $20/bbl spikes on sustained threats. Watch Houthi strikes and weekly IMF data releases.
