The dominant pricing on cancellation for the French left's unitary primary reflects the Socialist Party's July 2026 internal vote to restrict its candidate selection to party militants and close allies, closing the door on a broader open process involving figures such as Clémentine Autain, François Ruffin, and Marine Tondelier. Autain publicly described the decision as the "nail in the coffin" and withdrew, while Tondelier and others acknowledged the effort as buried amid disputes over participation rules and ideological scope. This followed months of negotiations among non-LFI left parties that failed to bridge differences on an inclusive format ahead of the 2027 presidential cycle. Scenarios that could still alter the outcome include a late reversal by Socialist leadership or an unexpected cross-party agreement before any formal deadline, though current procedural barriers make such shifts unlikely.
