The SPLC faces an 11-count federal indictment in Alabama on wire fraud, false statements to banks, and money laundering conspiracy, centered on alleged donor deception involving millions paid to informants inside extremist groups between 2014 and 2023. The organization entered a not guilty plea, and a federal judge rejected its August 2026 motion to dismiss on vindictive prosecution grounds, allowing the case to proceed. Legal analysts have described the charges as legally thin, noting the difficulty of proving explicit donor misrepresentations or a disclosure duty, while highlighting political context under the current administration. With the trial timeline extending into late 2026 or beyond and no individuals initially charged, traders view conviction this year as unlikely.
