Kei Nishikori, the 36-year-old former world No. 4 and 2014 US Open runner-up now ranked No. 477 in his final season before retirement, faces 20-year-old countryman Rei Sakamoto (No. 157) in the deciding round of US Open qualifying on hard courts. Nishikori advanced with straight-sets wins over Sebastian Ofner and teenager Michael Antonius, showing improved aggression and winner production after ongoing injury recovery. Sakamoto, ranked as high as No. 148 this year, also posted consecutive straight-sets victories in qualifying, including against Alexandre Muller, building on recent hard-court results and a strong Next Gen trajectory. The all-Japanese matchup pits Nishikori’s extensive Grand Slam experience and motivation for a main-draw farewell against Sakamoto’s athleticism and recent form, with no prior competitive head-to-head but shared practice sessions.
