Kei Nishikori, the 36-year-old former world No. 4 and 2014 US Open finalist playing on a qualifying wild card in what he has announced as his final season, faces 20-year-old countryman Rei Sakamoto in the deciding round of US Open qualifying on hard courts. Nishikori advanced with straight-set wins over Sebastian Ofner and teenager Michael Antonius, showing improved aggression and winner production after recent injury setbacks, while Sakamoto, ranked around No. 157 with a career-high of 148, posted efficient victories over Jay Clarke and Alexandre Muller to reach this stage. The matchup pits Nishikori’s extensive Grand Slam experience and motivation against Sakamoto’s superior current ranking, height advantage, and strong recent form on the Challenger and qualifying circuits, with no prior head-to-head meeting between the players.
