The Chicago Cubs enter this series with a 69-50 record and strong playoff positioning in the NL Central and Wild Card race, fueled by an aggressive trade-deadline push that added rotation depth through Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes alongside recent strong outings from Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd. Chicago’s offense has shown consistent power and production in a stretch of games without off days, while recent form includes multiple wins and offensive outbursts. The Washington Nationals sit at 59-61 in the NL East, coming off a three-game win streak but dealing with key injuries, including outfielder James Wood on the injured list with an oblique strain. Recent roster moves and bullpen adjustments for Washington have provided some stability, though the club trails in overall standing and recent head-to-head trends favor the Cubs’ home/road splits and pitching matchups.
