Geopolitical tensions stemming from the 2026 Middle East conflict, including disruptions to Strait of Hormuz shipments, have kept Brent crude near $93–95 per barrel and WTI around $86–87 as of mid-August 2026, well below the all-time high of $147.50 reached in July 2008. Elevated inventories draws and supply shut-ins earlier in the year created a risk premium, though EIA and J.P. Morgan forecasts point to averages near $85 in Q3 2026 before declining toward $69–78 by year-end and into 2027 as production recovers and global balances rebuild. Key swing factors include OPEC+ output decisions, U.S. shale response, China demand trends, and any escalation or de-escalation in regional shipping routes, with resolution timelines directly influencing whether prices test prior peaks.
