In mid-July 2026, Iran directed the Houthis to prepare missile and drone strikes to close the chokepoint if the United States targets Iranian infrastructure, with the group publicly announcing a naval blockade on Saudi oil exports and claiming to have turned back or struck vessels. These moves followed earlier pauses after the 2025 Israel-Hamas ceasefire but resumed as Yemen-based attacks disrupted Red Sea routes. Trader sentiment reflects the strait’s role as a critical maritime gateway, where even partial blockades force costly rerouting around Africa and heighten risks of wider escalation or de-escalation through diplomacy.
