The Chicago Cubs (74-55) enter the August 22 matchup at T-Mobile Park holding a five-game lead for the NL Wild Card, powered by a potent offense that ranks among the NL leaders in home runs and on-base percentage, with Pete Crow-Armstrong providing consistent leadoff production. The Seattle Mariners (61-68) trail in the AL West and Wild Card hunt but secured a 6-5 extra-innings victory in the series opener on Leo Rivas’s walk-off single, buoyed by Cal Raleigh’s three-run homer and home-field factors. Left-hander David Peterson starts for Chicago after showing improved command recently, while top prospect Kade Anderson makes his MLB debut for Seattle; both clubs carry multiple injuries that thin their rotations and bullpens. Recent form is even at 5-5 over the last 10 games for each side, with the Cubs’ road strength and power edge balanced against the Mariners’ situational home resilience in a low-scoring park.
