The St. Louis Cardinals enter the upcoming series against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park holding a 61-60 record, three games ahead of the 57-62 Reds in the NL Central standings. The Cardinals have posted a stronger recent stretch, including a 7-3 mark over their last 10 games and back-to-back wins, while the Reds have dealt with inconsistency and a recent skid. Key roster notes include Cardinals right-hander Max Rajcic on the 60-day injured list with elbow soreness and third baseman Ramon Urias sidelined, alongside Reds right-hander Graham Ashcraft's potential return around August 17. As divisional rivals with frequent matchups, both clubs face tight playoff implications in a competitive NL field, with pitching matchups, home/road splits, and bullpen reliability likely shaping outcomes in the August series.
