Major technology firms are accelerating plans for orbital AI infrastructure as terrestrial power and land constraints intensify compute demand. SpaceX detailed its AI1 Compute Satellite design with potential first launches in 2027 and filed for a constellation of up to one million units, while Google’s Project Suncatcher advances prototype satellites for early 2027 testing with TPUs and optical links. NVIDIA-backed Starcloud already trained an AI model aboard its November 2025 satellite and seeks FCC approval for 88,000 satellites. These moves reflect trader focus on near-term hardware demonstrations, though full operational data centers face hurdles in radiation tolerance, inter-satellite bandwidth, launch economics, and regulatory approval before meaningful market impact.
