Daniil Medvedev enters the US Open first-round matchup against Hugo Gaston on outdoor hard courts at Arthur Ashe Stadium as the clear favorite, backed by his career 287-98 hard-court record and top-10 ranking despite a recent dip that includes four losses in his last five matches, most notably a straight-sets defeat to Martin Damm in Winston-Salem. The 30-year-old Russian has struggled for consistency on the lead-up hard-court swing but retains a strong head-to-head edge (1-0) and far greater Grand Slam experience. Gaston, ranked No. 88, arrives after successfully navigating qualifying with a comeback win over Colton Smith, showcasing his left-handed variety and break-point conversion on hard courts where he holds a 7-6 record this season. The 25-year-old Frenchman’s recent form has been solid at lower levels, yet his limited main-draw success and lower win rate against elite opposition shape the wide gap in trader consensus around the outcome.
