Capital expenditures are defined as purchases of property and equipment as reported in Amazon's consolidated statements of cash flows under investing activities, consistent with how Amazon has historically disclosed this figure. Alternate metrics that differ in definition or scope will not be considered.Amazon raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $220 billion during its July 30 Q2 earnings release, citing elevated memory chip costs and persistent AWS demand that continues to exceed available capacity. This follows the February announcement of a $200 billion target, already well above the prior year’s $131 billion outlay and analyst models at the time. The bulk of spending targets AI data centers, custom silicon, networking, and related infrastructure, with AWS revenue growth accelerating to 37% year-over-year in the latest quarter. Traders are monitoring quarterly capex run rates, free-cash-flow compression, and any further revisions ahead of the Q3 report for signals on whether actual 2026 spend will settle materially above or below the updated $220 billion level.
