Tomas Machac enters as the clear favorite in this Winston-Salem Open second-round matchup on hard courts, reflecting traders' assessment of his higher ranking near No. 58 and greater ATP-level experience against 19-year-old qualifier Mees Rottgering. The Czech arrives after an injury layoff and a straight-sets loss to Pablo Carreno Busta in Cincinnati, leaving him short on match fitness despite an 8-5 hard-court record this season and an earlier Adelaide title. Rottgering, ranked around No. 389 and competing for Wake Forest, brings strong recent momentum with straight-set qualifying wins and his first ATP main-draw victory over Jan Choinski, posting a 29-11 seasonal mark and solid hard-court results. With no prior head-to-head and Machac holding a significant edge in baseline consistency and return strength, the market pricing underscores the gap in proven level while noting Rottgering’s potential to extend rallies as a left-hander.
