Carlos Alcaraz returns from a four-month right wrist injury absence—his first singles match since April—for a first-round US Open clash against Roman Safiullin on outdoor hard courts. The defending champion and No. 2 seed has shown cautious movement and a moderated serve in recent mixed doubles play alongside Serena Williams, while Safiullin arrives off a strong Wimbledon run to the round of 16 that included upsets of higher-ranked players before a loss to Novak Djokovic. The Russian holds a 1-1 head-to-head edge, with his 2023 Paris Masters victory highlighting his powerful serve and baseline aggression that could test Alcaraz’s durability in a best-of-five format. Recent results show Safiullin at world No. 98 with modest 2026 form outside grass, creating a matchup where Alcaraz’s superior ranking and experience contrast with lingering questions over match fitness and bracket progression.
