Juncheng Shang enters this US Open first-round matchup as the clear market favorite against Marco Trungelliti, driven by his left-handed baseline aggression and hard-court pedigree despite a modest 5-7 record in 2026. The 21-year-old Chinese player, a former top-50 talent with a career-high ranking of 47, has shown flashes of quality including a notable upset over Andrey Rublev in Montreal, though limited match play and recent early exits raise questions about fitness in best-of-five sets. Trungelliti, the 36-year-old Argentine ranked 83rd, is a clay-court specialist with the bulk of his success and titles on that surface; his hard-court results remain sparse, with a 5-5 mark this season and just one prior US Open win. No prior head-to-head exists, leaving surface transition and recent form as the primary variables shaping trader consensus on the hard courts in New York.
