Alexander Zverev enters the US Open first round against Lorenzo Sonego as the top seed for the first time at a major, benefiting from Jannik Sinner’s right-knee withdrawal and holding a 46–13 record after claiming his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros. The German has reached at least the semifinals in every 2026 major and leads the head-to-head 6–0, including recent hard- and grass-court wins. Sonego, ranked No. 91 with a 12–15 seasonal mark, arrives after mixed North American results and an early Winston-Salem exit, though he showed flashes by ousting a seeded player there. Zverev’s powerful serve and baseline game align well with Flushing Meadows hard courts, while limited recent match play has not altered the clear gap in ranking, form, and experience reflected in current market pricing.
