Elevated geopolitical tensions, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, attacks on Saudi pipelines, and refinery outages tied to U.S.-Iran and Russia-Ukraine conflicts, have driven WTI crude to approximately $101 per barrel as of September 17, 2026. This supply shock has pushed the national regular gasoline average to $4.44, up 16 cents week-over-week and more than $1.20 year-over-year, with state-level prices ranging from roughly $3.75–$3.92 in low-cost markets like Indiana to over $6 in California. Regional differences stem from taxes, refining capacity, and distribution costs, while recent EIA data show rising demand supporting higher crack spreads. Traders monitoring this market should watch upcoming crude inventory reports, conflict developments, and any seasonal blend shifts that could influence near-term price floors.
