The South Korean won has strengthened sharply in recent weeks, with USD/KRW falling to around 1,338 on September 9, 2026—its lowest level since October 2024—driven primarily by robust semiconductor export earnings from firms like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which have generated substantial dollar-selling flows alongside a record current-account surplus. Elevated oil prices from Middle East tensions and importer demand have provided some counter-pressure, while markets price in roughly a 60% chance of a September Federal Reserve rate hike that could support the dollar. The Bank of Korea’s 3.00% policy rate and potential further tightening also influence the pair. Key near-term catalysts include upcoming U.S. inflation and employment data, FOMC decisions, and any shifts in foreign equity flows or yen strength. Trader sentiment on 2026 levels reflects these export-driven fundamentals balanced against global monetary policy differentials and geopolitical risks.
