The NFL single-season interceptions record of 14, set by Dick “Night Train” Lane in 1952, remains untouched in the modern era, with no defender reaching 12 since Lester Hayes posted 13 in 1980. Recent seasons underscore the barrier: Kevin Byard led 2025 with just seven picks amid a league-wide interception rate of roughly 2.2 percent of pass attempts, reflecting rule emphasis on offensive protection, refined quarterback decision-making, and stronger passing schemes. Entering 2026, no active player has shown consistent double-digit potential in recent campaigns, and schedule, matchup, or injury variables have not produced the outlier volume historically required. Trader consensus at 73.5 percent on “No” aligns with these sustained trends limiting realistic paths to the record.
