The Iranian rial faces intense depreciation pressure amid the ongoing 2026 US-Israel-Iran war, which erupted on February 28 with airstrikes on Iranian sites, including Tehran, degrading air defenses and prompting retaliatory missile strikes. Recent developments include US troops injured in an Iranian attack on March 27, Israel warning of escalation, and President Trump extending the Strait of Hormuz deadline while pushing a 15-point ceasefire proposal that Iran is reviewing. Black-market USD/IRR rates hover near 1.57 million as of March 28, up from January lows around 1.5 million, fueled by sanctions limiting oil exports, hyperinflation prompting a new highest-denomination note, and economic unrest. Traders eye April ceasefire talks or further military actions, including potential US ground entry, as pivotal for resolution by April 30.
