Daniel Merida Aguilar enters as the slight ranking favorite at No. 101 over Francesco Maestrelli's No. 113 in this Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell qualifying first-round clay-court clash, buoyed by a 6-2, 6-4 straight-sets victory over Maestrelli in the Tenerife 1 Challenger final two months ago. The Spaniard boasts stronger recent clay form, reaching the Bucharest Challenger final last week before falling to Mariano Navone, while Maestrelli exited early in Monte-Carlo qualifying with a 7-6(3), 6-2 loss to Alexander Blockx. Home-crowd support and surface affinity favor Merida in this best-of-three-sets matchup under mild Barcelona weather, though Maestrelli's power from 196cm could test Aguilar's defense in a closely contested qualifier.
