OpenAI's release of GPT-5.5 on April 23, 2026—the company's "smartest and most intuitive" model to date, with superior coding efficiency and multimodal capabilities—has solidified trader consensus around their dominance in the GPT lineage, tempering near-term GPT-6 expectations despite earlier hype. Pre-training for the rumored GPT-6 successor, codenamed "Spud," wrapped up March 24 at OpenAI's Stargate data center, but April 14 launch speculation fizzled without confirmation, reflecting typical delays in post-training, red-teaming, and safety evaluations. Competitors like Anthropic's Claude 4.7 and Google's Gemini 3.1 trail in benchmarks, while xAI and Meta focus on distinct architectures. Watch for OpenAI's next developer conference or earnings call for GPT-6 signals amid intensifying AI safety regulations.

For this market to resolve to "Yes," GPT-6 must be launched and publicly accessible, including via open beta or open rolling waitlist signups. A closed beta or any form of private access will not suffice. The release must be clearly defined and publicly announced by OpenAI as being accessible to the general public.
GPT-6 refers to a product explicitly named GPT-6 (e.g. ChatGPT-6o would count), or one that is recognized as a successor to GPT-5, similar to the progression from GPT-3 to GPT-4. Products labeled as GPT-5.5 or similar will not count for this market's resolution.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from OpenAI, with additional verification from a consensus of credible reporting.
