Denis Shapovalov enters the BMW Open round of 16 as the slight trader consensus favorite over Fabian Marozsan in their first head-to-head clash on Munich's clay courts, buoyed by his gritty three-set comeback win over eighth seed Tallon Griekspoor on Tuesday. Shapovalov, ranked No. 39, has shown resurgence in 2026 with upsets like Stefanos Tsitsipas at Indian Wells and quarterfinal runs in Dallas, leveraging his lefty power despite clay not being his preferred surface. Marozsan, No. 42, rides momentum from a stunning three-set upset of Tsitsipas—resumed after bad light suspension—highlighting his baseline resilience, though his 9-10 season record tempers expectations amid Shapovalov's higher ranking and recent form edge. No injuries reported for either ahead of Thursday's matchup.
