The Iranian rial has depreciated sharply to around 1.56 million per USD on free markets as of April 16, driven by tightened US sanctions on Tehran's oil transportation infrastructure announced April 15 and the non-renewal of a key oil export waiver, exacerbating revenue losses amid the 2026 Iran conflict's aftermath. Hyperinflation, civilian economic collapse, and prior record lows near 1.5 million in January have fueled ongoing depreciation, with black market rates reflecting supply shortages and unrest. Traders eye potential US-Iran negotiations or escalation signals before April 30 resolution, alongside oil price volatility from blockades or truce developments, as pivotal for further devaluation.
