Carlos Alcaraz enters the 2026 US Open first round on hard courts as the defending champion and a clear market favorite after a four-month absence caused by a right wrist injury that sidelined him since the Barcelona Open in April. The Spaniard, who completed the career Grand Slam with his Australian Open title earlier in the year, has ramped up training intensity in recent weeks, including extended sessions with Holger Rune, and expressed confidence in his readiness despite limited recent match play. Roman Safiullin, ranked around No. 99, brings a career-high of No. 36 and a notable straight-sets win over Alcaraz on hard courts in 2023, along with a strong Wimbledon run to the fourth round this season. However, the Russian arrives with inconsistent recent hard-court results and faces a significant class gap against the three-time major winner on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Market pricing reflects broad trader consensus on Alcaraz advancing comfortably in best-of-five, tempered by the inherent uncertainty of any player’s first competitive singles outing following extended time away.
