Kirk Cousins secured the Las Vegas Raiders' Week 1 starting quarterback role through consistent first-team reps in training camp and a steady preseason showing under head coach Klint Kubiak, who previously collaborated with him in Minnesota. The 38-year-old veteran outperformed rookie first-overall pick Fernando Mendoza, whose camp and exhibition play proved inconsistent, while Aidan O'Connell remained the clear third option on the depth chart. Official team announcements and depth-chart reports locked in Cousins ahead of the September 13 opener against Miami, reflecting the coaching staff's preference for veteran stability to open the season. A late injury or abrupt roster shift represents the only realistic path to altering the outcome, though none materialized before kickoff.
