Recent soft U.S. economic data, including tame July inflation and weaker jobs and retail figures, have reduced market-implied odds of a September Federal Reserve rate hike, providing the main catalyst lifting gold (XAUUSD) toward the $4,400 level on August 17. Lower real yields and a softer dollar typically boost gold's appeal as a non-yielding asset, while persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East sustain safe-haven demand alongside ongoing central bank purchases. Traders are now focused on the August 19 FOMC minutes for clarity on policy divergence and any shifts in inflation or labor market assessments that could alter rate path expectations.
