Recent Middle East supply disruptions, including attacks on shipping and reduced Strait of Hormuz transit, have driven WTI crude prices to approximately $85 per barrel as of mid-August 2026, up over 3% in recent sessions amid fading de-escalation hopes. This follows 2026 volatility that saw spikes above $100 earlier in the year before a mid-year drop below $70. The 2008 all-time high of $147.27 remains distant, with EIA and J.P. Morgan forecasts pointing to average prices near $85 for Q3 2026 before easing on expected inventory builds and OPEC+ supply normalization. Key near-term catalysts include weekly U.S. inventory data, potential further geopolitical developments, and any shifts in global demand amid broader economic conditions.
