Mojtaba Khamenei assumed Iran’s supreme leadership in March 2026 after the Assembly of Experts selected him to succeed his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed during U.S.-Israeli strikes in late February. As the sitting supreme leader, he directs policy through clerical and IRGC networks from Tehran despite limited public visibility and April reports of medical treatment in Qom following his own injuries in the conflict. Ongoing ceasefire monitoring, reconstruction priorities, and external diplomatic pressures create structural incentives for continuity in Iran. Health updates, internal elite dynamics, or renewed military escalation remain the primary variables that could influence any near-term departure scenario.
