The USD/KRW rate, currently near 1,515–1,520 in mid-June 2026 after trading in a 1,428–1,559 range year-to-date, reflects structural KRW weakness from persistent capital outflows tied to Korea’s aging demographics and retail/institutional demand for foreign assets, alongside cyclical pressures from Fed easing expectations and global risk sentiment. Government intervention in late 2025 and Korea Treasury inclusion in the World Government Bond Index from April 2026 have supported inflows and moderated depreciation, while forecasts cluster around 1,400–1,550 by year-end depending on the pace of U.S. rate cuts, BoK policy divergence, and export performance amid potential tariff headwinds. Trader-implied odds on hitting specific 2026 thresholds hinge primarily on whether narrowing U.S.-Korea rate differentials and bond inflows can offset structural dollar demand.
