Romania's protracted political crisis, triggered by the May 2026 no-confidence vote that ended the Bolojan-led grand coalition, has centered authority for designating the next prime minister with President Nicușor Dan under constitutional rules requiring parliamentary confirmation within ten days. Fragmented parliament, including PSD withdrawal and far-right opposition, has blocked recent nominees Eugen Tomac and Adrian Vestea, leaving the caretaker administration in place and delaying EU recovery funds. Dan continues consultations to identify a viable candidate capable of securing votes, with minority government scenarios gaining traction amid stalled coalition talks. Upcoming parliamentary sessions and any renewed party negotiations could shift momentum toward resolution before the Recovery and Resilience Plan deadline.
