Virginia’s Democratic-led legislature advanced a mid-decade redistricting plan and constitutional amendment in early 2026 that would have replaced the 2021 maps with lines projected to yield ten Democratic-leaning districts. On May 8, 2026, however, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the amendment process violated the state constitution’s intervening-election requirement, nullifying both the referendum and the new map. The 2021 lines therefore remain in force for the November 2026 midterms, with candidate filing deadlines and August primaries already proceeding under the existing districts.
