Recent inflation readings and a divided FOMC have anchored trader consensus around a market-implied 65% probability that the next federal funds rate adjustment will be a hike. June 2026 CPI eased to 3.5% year-over-year from 4.2% in May, yet remained above target amid energy-price pressures tied to Middle East developments, while the July 29 FOMC meeting produced a 9-3 vote to hold the target range at 3.5–3.75%. Three hawkish dissents and Chair Kevin Warsh’s emphasis on price stability reinforced expectations that incoming data could shift the Committee toward tightening. The July CPI release on August 12 and the September 16–17 FOMC meeting now stand as the key near-term catalysts that could either solidify or temper these odds.
