The April 2026 federal indictment charging the Southern Poverty Law Center with 11 counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering—alleging undisclosed payments to informants inside extremist groups—has shaped trader views on a 2026 conviction. The organization entered a not guilty plea in July, prompting motions to dismiss on grounds of vindictive prosecution amid a superseding indictment with added details on donor fund handling. Ongoing court proceedings in Alabama, including briefing on sanctions and dismissal requests, keep resolution timelines uncertain through year-end. These developments reflect a contested legal process where procedural outcomes and evidentiary rulings could tip the balance in either direction.
