Official National Weather Service forecasts and supporting model consensus project a September 20 high in Chicago’s upper 60s, driven by persistent cloud cover, widespread showers, and northeasterly breezes off Lake Michigan that limit daytime warming and enhance mixing. These conditions follow a weekend of heavy rainfall and embedded thunderstorms that have maintained elevated soil moisture and suppressed temperatures below seasonal averages near 75°F. Market-implied odds heavily favor the 68-69°F bin because observed hourly trends and guidance show little potential for brief clearing or stronger southerly flow that could push readings into the low 70s. Updated model runs and NWS briefings ahead of the 24-hour period will refine whether any late-day breaks allow marginal warming.
