Romania's ongoing political crisis, triggered by the May 2026 no-confidence vote that ousted Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, centers on repeated failures to secure parliamentary approval for a new cabinet. President Nicușor Dan holds the constitutional authority to nominate prime ministerial candidates after consulting parties, but two prior designees—Eugen Tomac and Adrian Vestea—did not obtain the required majority, with the 60-day window for potential dissolution approaching amid stalled talks. Recent developments include accelerated negotiations ahead of an early October S&P sovereign review, with Dan reportedly favoring diplomat Luca Niculescu to lead a PSD-centered minority government backed by a parliamentary agreement. Centre-right parties have floated Siegfried Mureșan as an alternative, while PSD pushes Sorin Grindeanu; AUR's rising poll numbers add pressure to avoid snap elections. Traders weigh the president's nomination power against parliament's confirmation requirement and fiscal deadlines.
