Big Tobacco’s pursuit of nicotine pouch brands reflects a strategic pivot amid surging demand for modern oral products, with the category projected to exceed $40 billion globally by 2033 as cigarette volumes decline. Philip Morris International’s 2022 acquisition of Swedish Match and its dominant Zyn franchise established an early lead, while Altria’s On! portfolio and British American Tobacco’s Velo (formerly Dryft) round out the major holdings. Recent momentum includes Altria’s 2025 memorandum of understanding with KT&G to explore further modern oral deals, including an ownership stake in Nordic pouch maker ASF, alongside ongoing FDA marketing authorizations that enhance regulatory credibility and commercial scale. Smaller independent or regional players remain potential targets as companies race to secure capacity, flavors, and distribution ahead of intensified competition and plant expansions.
