Matteo Berrettini enters this ATP Masters 1000 Monte Carlo round-of-16 clash on fire after a wild card entry, advancing via a first-round retirement and a stunning 6-0, 6-0 demolition of Daniil Medvedev—his first perfect-set wins on clay in years amid a career plagued by injuries like oblique and foot issues earlier in 2026. Joao Fonseca, the 19-year-old Brazilian ranked No. 40, makes his tournament debut with straight-sets wins over Gabriel Diallo and a gritty three-setter against Arthur Rinderknech, leveraging his rising power game but facing a step up against Berrettini's experience on heavy Monte Carlo clay. Berrettini leads their head-to-head 1-0 from a 2024 Davis Cup win, though Fonseca's youth and crowd support add upset potential on this slow surface.
