Marin Cilic enters his BMW Open round-of-32 matchup against Daniel Altmaier as the slight trader favorite on clay, buoyed by a dominant straight-sets victory over the German in their Australian Open first-round clash earlier in 2026 and his resilient form following knee surgeries that sidelined him for much of 2023-2025. The 37-year-old Croat, now ranked No. 51, recently celebrated his 600th tour-level win and advanced deep in Dallas, showcasing a powerful serve effective even on slower surfaces. Altmaier (No. 49), despite home-crowd support in Munich, endured a winless-set slump through March before reaching Bucharest quarterfinals last week, highlighting baseline consistency issues against big hitters. No major injuries reported, though clay suits Altmaier's grinding style historically better than Cilic's.
