Daniel Merida Aguilar holds a decided edge entering this Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell qualifier on clay, fresh off a runner-up finish at the Bucharest Challenger last week where he pushed Mariano Navone to three sets, bolstering his No. 101 ranking. Francesco Maestrelli, ranked No. 113-114, struggled recently with a round-of-32 exit in Bucharest and a qualifying loss to Alexander Blockx at Monte-Carlo Masters. Merida's 6-2, 6-4 straight-sets victory over Maestrelli in the February Tenerife 1 Challenger final—his only head-to-head win—fuels trader consensus, amplified by his Spanish wild card (11) and home-crowd boost. Both boast solid clay records (Merida 28-12, Maestrelli 20-12 last 52 weeks), but Merida's momentum and stylistic matchup favor him in this best-of-three Q1 clash.
