Patrick Mahomes holds overwhelming market consensus as the Chiefs' Week 1 starter because the three-time Super Bowl MVP remains the undisputed franchise quarterback following his June 2026 contract extension through 2033. After suffering a torn ACL and LCL in December 2025, Mahomes has progressed ahead of schedule in training camp, earning full clearance for live reps with no reported setbacks and expressing strong confidence in his readiness for the September 14 opener against Denver. The presence of backup Justin Fields provides depth but does not alter the depth chart hierarchy under Andy Reid. Realistic challenges to Mahomes starting would require a significant late-camp complication or re-aggravation of the knee, situations that have not materialized in official reports or camp observations to date.
