The 2026–27 Croatian HNL season opened with a tightly contested race for third, as early results and squad reinforcements have left no single side pulling clear. Osijek and Varaždin sit atop the table after five rounds with strong starts, while Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split remain within touching distance despite fewer games played; Rijeka, Lokomotiva, and Istra 1961 sit just behind on points and goal difference. Pre-season forecasts highlighted comparable attacking depth and defensive organization among the upper mid-table group, and recent transfers—such as Dinamo’s return of Luka Ivanušec and Hajduk’s addition of Khalil Fayad—have further leveled the field without creating an obvious frontrunner. With 10 teams and a long schedule ahead, small swings in form or head-to-head results continue to compress probabilities across the contenders.
