The Bharatiya Janata Party’s commanding position in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation election market stems from its decisive May 2026 West Bengal assembly victory, where it secured a majority and led in 102 of the city’s 144 wards compared to the All India Trinamool Congress in just 42. This momentum, following the end of TMC’s long control of the civic body, has prompted ward delimitation to 209 seats and scheduled polls for late 2026. BJP leaders have intensified organizational efforts, candidate selection, and outreach modeled on strong municipal governance examples. The All India Trinamool Congress retains pockets of support in certain minority areas, yet faces significant headwinds from the recent state-level realignment. Late developments such as voter consolidation shifts or turnout variations in specific wards remain the primary variables that could alter the outcome before resolution.
