Buckmaster claims OpenAI researchers, including Sébastien Bubeck, learned of his and Anthropic’s Levent Alpöge’s unpublished Navier-Stokes work via private Codex sessions, then pressured him to exclude the co-author due to competitive ties while issuing career-related warnings. OpenAI denies impropriety, stating its internal model independently produced a Lean-formalized proof after rumors surfaced, with Sam Altman publicly backing the team’s integrity. The dispute erupted publicly on September 8 following OpenAI’s announcement, highlighting tensions over AI training data provenance, authorship credit, and lab competition. No lawsuit has been filed as of September 10, though the heated exchange could prompt legal review of alleged threats or data issues before year-end resolution windows.
