Yordan Alvarez holds a commanding lead in 2026 MLB intentional walks through early August, already at 20-plus while the next closest players sit well behind. The Houston Astros designated hitter’s elite power, .330-plus batting average, and league-leading extra-base production prompt opposing managers to issue free passes in high-leverage spots, preserving run prevention and double-play opportunities. His consistent presence in the middle of a potent lineup amplifies the strategy. Late-season injury absences, dramatic shifts in Houston’s batting order, or unexpected surges from other sluggers such as Shohei Ohtani or Juan Soto represent the primary paths that could narrow the gap before the regular season concludes.
