Recent softer-than-expected CPI and PPI readings have eased near-term rate-hike concerns, supporting the S&P 500 near 7,780–7,800 after multiple record closes in mid-August 2026. The index has gained roughly 14–20% year-to-date amid resilient corporate earnings, with tech and semiconductors driving momentum while the Fed maintains its 3.50–3.75% funds-rate target. Traders are pricing limited policy tightening ahead of the September FOMC meeting, though upcoming data on retail sales, jobless claims, and any Fed communications could shift rate-path expectations. Seasonality and potential volatility from geopolitical or oil-price moves remain secondary considerations for short-term index levels.
